How to Get Maximum Benefit From the Time You're Saving w/ PTYD

Now you've got dinner nailed down, let me tell you about my #1 takeaway as an alum of the Institute for Integrative Nutrition is a concept called Primary Food.

I’ll start by defining what Primary Food isn't- it is not actual food!

Actually, in this school of thought, literal food is referred to as Secondary Food.

Instead Primary Food is everything else in your life that contributes to your health and well-being.

This probably includes things currently awaiting you on your To-Do List:

  • Physical movement & exercise.

  • Quality time with friends and family.

  • Uncluttered and inspiring home and work environments.

  • Work you can enjoy & find meaningful.

  • A spiritual practice or community that nourishes you.

  • Learning more about a subject you're curious about.

  • Feeling secure financially.

  • Drawing, dancing, gardening, cooking, making music, theater & other creative outlets

  • Laundry

Except for the last one all of these are examples of Primary Food :-P

And all these things take: you guessed it, time!

Sometimes we get so wrapped up in what we should and shouldn’t be eating that little energy is left over.

Redistributing time towards all the other things that help us feel happy and balanced can be energizing and make life’s challenges feel more surmountable.

For Example! While I believe that home cooking is valuable in many ways that I will enumerate another time, there are definite benefits to outsourcing some of the time you would otherwise spend cooking (or grabbing takeout).

This week try this little exercise:

1. Roughly calculate how much time your PTYD subscription is saving you each day.

2. Sit down with your calendar and reallocate that 20-30-60 minutes you saved to one of the things listed above, or another activity that brings you joy.

3. Notice how you feel after each activity, as well as what it’s like to look at a schedule that includes Primary Food as well as work projects and appointments.
